Description
DESCRIPTION: Very RARE MARKED Antique Automobile Oil Bottle Spout, "MOBIL E GARGOYLE", Vacuum Oil Co. Also stamped with some Mass. registration numbers. I assume the "E" was a particular grade or viscosity of the oil. Gargoyle of course was Mobil's trade name for many years. Neat that it has not only the word Gargoyle, but also the logo shape itself formed into the metal. Vacuum Oil Co. may have been the supplier or distributor of the Mobil Oil in drums.Scans show the antique glass oil bottle spout. The oil bottles were used in early automobiles to hold and dispense oil during oil changes and addition. Each had a long metal spout that screwed on the top for pouring. These glass containers were reusable. Typically, oil was purchased in large cans or drums, then transferred as needed to these bottles and kept ready for use in individual cars. These were typically used in the 1920's. Few of the screw-on spouts were marked, and even those only had the manufacturer's and patent date information. THIS IS THE ONLY ONE I HAVE EVER SEEN WITH ANY TIES TO OR MARKINGS FOR A NAME BRAND LIKE MOBIL OIL!!!
Good condition overall. And of course,
PARTICULARLY NICE WITH THE MARKED (STAMPED) METAL SPOUT, WITH THE MOBIL INFORMATION. I haven't seen too many marked bottle tops, and THIS IS THE ONLY ONE I HAVE EVER SEEN THAT HAS BOTH.
Measures 6 3/4" tall overall and has the correct thread at the base to fit the glass bottle. This is an extremely difficult-to-find IDENTIFIED antique auto or service station accessory, and you will not see them for sale often, if ever.
This would make a great gift or a nice display item for the discerning collector, and obviously a cool accessory to go with your antique car.
