Recent rural Virginia estate find.Offering a quite rare, early 1900's Petroliana can; a five gallon National Oil Company, Visco-lub Oil can with spout. The graphics seem to be the same on all four sides and are definitely
.
a little difficult to read, but a couple sides are a little more legible and most likely could be treated to pop even more. We haven't done anything other than cleaned the surface dirt and dust with a damp cloth. The base color looks to be a dark red and the sides are marked with the logo and Baltimore, MD, Norfolk, VA and Richmond, VA. The only date we found was on the cap, June 1, 1909. We assume this is a patent date for the unique spout. There is a small notation on the bottom of the can that looks to be "Am. Can Co. 14A." Most likely the maker and internal can size code; American Can Company, New York (at that time). A couple of superficial and very small dents or ripples, but very insignificant. With research we found just a handful of examples for early metal signs, but not a can and to find a five gallon metal can from this period is exceptional. Please review all photos for design, dimensions and conditions. Photos do contain measurements. The can is not marked as 5 gallons; however, if you do the math on cubic inches of volume and convert to gallons, it's five gallons.
