    Description

Fletcher’s Castoria Bottle, Labels Front & Back. In German! Has Screw Top Lid!.
Wow. Search a long time on eBay and you’ll rarely, RARELY find a Castoria bottle with a a lid AND labels, front and back. Go ahead - do a search - they simply don’t come up very often, if at all.
Charles H. Fletcher concocted Castoria as a more pleasant and consistent alternative to castor oil. It was the preferred “modern” laxative of its day.
This bottle is in very good condition. The front label is intact (but still brittle.as are all old paper products made from wood pulp; the acid used in manufacturing the paper remains active and, over the years, continues to “eat away” at the wood pulp). The rear label is 85% there, missing just a sliver down the right side.
All text is easy to read. And it’s all in German! How cool is that? Whatever the story is behind this bottle it is likely fascinating one. Was it brought over by immigrants? Or was it bought here, but labeled to sell in a German community? The bottle is of American manufacture by the Pierce Glass Company.
The embossing is bold and beautiful. One edge side of the bottle has CASTORIA in bold, block capitals; the other edge has Fletcher’s flowing signature. The bottom/base has a P in a circle, the glass makers mark (Pierce) and. USA and the number 2. Note: In the photos I’ve highlighted the embossed script with a lime green line. This is NOT on the bottle itself, it’s just a technique I use to make the raised lettering more visible.
The cap (so rare!) is an ivory color with a miniature imprint of Fletcher’s signature in red. It is eye catching.
If you’re a collector, this is the bottle for you. It would also make a great gift for a physician or other health care person who enjoys vintage items. I visit one clinic here in Seattle that has a display case in the lobby of all the old medicine bottles and packages from the turn of the century until about 1930. It is a very interesting collection; patients in the waiting room love to peruse it, passing time enjoyably. This could be the start for you!
Take a look at the pictures; They constitute part of the description. The bottle is sold as is. It is, of course, fragile because of the paper, so it should be displayed where it will not be handled.
