    Description

This is an antique medicine bottle embossed on either side, "Dr. Drake's Glessco" and "Croup Remedy".  The bottom of the vintage remedy bottle is embossed with the Owens Glass mark of an O inside of  a square and "61".  The Owens mark dates the vintage quack medicine bottle between 1911 and 1929.  My father, an avid bottle digger, found the vintage bottle in the ruins of an old home in Virginia more than 40 years ago.  The old cork topped bottle (cork is missing) is in wonderful condition for a 100 year old bottle, free from breaks or cracks.  The bottom is a little rough to the touch.  Clarity is excellent.  The antique Croup remedy bottle measures about 6.25" x 2" x 1.25".
Dr. Drake's Croup Remedy was sold by The Glessner Medicine Company of Findlay, OH, starting around 1887.  The Glessner's purchased the recipe from a real Dr. Drake practicing in Iowa.  A trademark feud developed when Drake, feeling cheated, tried to get the rights to his name back.  The "remedy" was also featured in a 1908 case where use of the "cure" resulted in the death of a 4 year old.  Apparently the "cure" contained Opium.
